Return to Odds and Ends

Bottom Fest 2013

The original Sande Ace had just a painted bottom.  Ed had used a styrene/fiberglass combination on the chines and bow (1963), back to paint (1985 and 2005) and epoxy/fiberglass on the chines (2009) with limited success.  When the bottom wedges were damaged by trailer bunks and more leaks developed, he was going to just fix this small problem.

But no!  Bob Parks and Tom Regan shamed Ed into doing the entire bottom correctly.  Dan Poole also chimed in for his Sande Ace and the Bottom Fest was on!

Bob coordinated the Fest and Tom Regan generously gave us space and, more important, advice at his Grapeview Point Boat Works.

Turn the boat over but beware!  Boat builders, like Tom, use the words “up, down, upper and lower” as if the boat is always right side up!  But Ed finally understood that for a flipped boat:
“up" is towards the center of the earth
"down" is towards the moon!

Bob (Bottom Fest Boss), Dan and Tom sanding down to the wood.

Ed, Tom and Dan.

Tom strongly advised using Dynel fabric instead of fiberglass.
We all know that if Tom gives you advice, FOLLOW IT.

After two coats of epoxy, the Dynel was trimmed and after curing fully, it was ready for paint.

More Ace bottom work.

Tom previously used the epoxy/Dynel combination on Dale and Barney's Aces.

Ed stripped and just painted his Ace in 2005.  The leaky chines were covered with epoxy/fiberglass in 2009.
